On 8th May 2013 an article was published in The Times quoting the work of Dr Hanne Albert who had found that back pain associated with Modic changes on MRI scan of the lumbar vertebrae could often be relieved by a 100-day course of an antibiotic. Dr Harley supported this research trial by arranging blood tests for those of his patients who had such Modic changes and prescribing the antibiotic for those who were positive for the infection, which was thought to be due to the common acne bacterium. The changes must be shown on an MRI scan before antibiotics are offered.
Dr Harley has published articles on the diagnosis and treatment of back pain, and lectured on treatments of musculoskeletal conditions at The London School of Osteopathy, The British School of Osteopathy, and The Red Cross Society in Cape Town. He was a member of The Croydon Medical Society, and founded a GP discussion group in Surrey.
